Picking the Right Speaker, Key to Successful Event

justinpulliam
By Justin Pulliam, on Jun 14, 2010 In

Editor's Note: Justin Pulliam is a rising senior at Texas A&M University and the president of the Texas Aggie Conservatives, a conservative campus group.

While I would always encourage groups to make activism events their first priority, speaker events can serve a purpose in diversified conservative groups.

Speaker events can help recruit new members, educate existing members, reach out to the community, and provide a forum for debate.  However, there are many factors that go into picking the perfect speaker for the event.

Based on my experience hosting conservative speakers at Texas A&M, here are the things I recommend that you consider.

  • Cost. Spending more money on a speaker doesn't mean better results. The most successful speaker events we've hosted at A&M have been those we spent the least on. Many non-conservative students may not immediately recognize the names of conservative leaders, so spending more money on "well-known" speakers typically doesn't get you a better turn out.
  • Topic. Be sure to make your event about a relevant topic. Shoot for a topic that is in line with national news that can also be tied in locally and at a university level. For instance, now would be the perfect time for an illegal immigration speaker (Arizona law in national news, but can be tied back to university if your school gives in state tuition to illegal aliens).

Make activism your organization's first priority

justinpulliam
By Justin Pulliam, on Jun 11, 2010 In

Perhaps only a seasoned conservative activist would venture into writing blog posts as controversial as this one will most likely be, but it is time to have the discussion about what to do with your conservative organization.  There is an opportunity cost for everything your organization chooses to do.  Time, money, effort, people, risk, and reputation are all limited resources, and it is prudent that these resources be used in the most efficient way to accomplish the goals of your organization (advancing the conservative movement, fighting for a single issue, etc.).

As a conservative leader, you will be bombarded by those wanting you to host a speaker.  But is that really the best thing to do?  Here are the top five things you should consider before deciding to hold a speaker event:

Ending automatic in-state tuition for illegal aliens in Texas

justinpulliam
By Justin Pulliam, on May 10, 2010 In

Since 2001, Texas has allowed illegal aliens to receive in-state tuition at Texas A&M and other state universities.  HB 1403 was passed in 2001, and it made Texas the first state to give in-state tuition to illegal aliens.

Instead of cutting taxes or fixing roads, Texas forked out the money to subsidize 12,138 illegal students this school year.  This costs Texans millions each year.

To address this problem, I -- along with over 40 other Aggies -- introduced a bill to the Student Senate to end the practice of giving automatic in-state tuition to illegal aliens.

The purpose of subsidizing state education is to produce a more educated workforce for the state.  However, illegal aliens cannot legally work in the United States, so it does not make sense to subsidize the education of someone who cannot work after college!

It's not right that illegal aliens receive in-state tuition while legal U.S. citizens living out of state are paying $15,000 more each year to attend Texas A&M.  In fact, this practice violates a federal law that prohibits giving a higher education benefit to an illegal alien unless that benefit is also given to any American citizen.  Giving in-state tuition to illegal aliens rewards breaking the law -- why come here legally when you would have to pay more?

A&M Student Senators Push Bill to End In-State Tuition for Illegal Immigrants (and get tons of media coverage!)

tonylisti

Last night, three student senators at Texas A&M University, including LI-trained Justin Pulliam and Steven Crumpley, introduced a bill in the Student Senate to "oppose measures to give in-state tuition to persons residing in the United States illegally." The senate bill currently has 34 sponsors but was tabled for now.

This past Saturday, Justin and other Aggies started a Facebook group called "Aggies Against In-State Tuition for Illegal Aliens." It now has over 1300 members.

Determined to reach out to the general public on this hot issue, Justin Pulliam wanted to send out a press release about this initiative. With the assistance of CampusReform.org staff, Justin created a press release and got it out to every major media outlet in the state of Texas.

Students Host Empty Holster Protest and Concealed Carry Speaker

tonylisti

Last week, the Students for Concealed Carry chapters at Texas A&M University and Blinn College did an Empty Holster Protest.  They recieved earned media attention from local news outslets; see coverage here, here, and here.

In addition to the protest, students hosted John Lott on the A&M campus to speak about the actual statistics and research that has been done on the effects of concealed carry laws.

"I really wanted to debate someone here, so they could tell me why they think banning handguns is a good idea, even though they can't show anywhere it works," said Lott. He continued:

I cannot find a single case where a country or city has banned firearms and the murder rate hasn't gone up.  I can't find a single one. I have been studying this issue for a long time. Every mass public shooting since 1979 with more than three dead has been in a so-called "guns free zone" where firearms are prohibited.... There is not a single peer-reviewed study that shows that concealed carry increases crime.  Not a single one!

Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, and Transgender Awareness Week at A&M

tonylisti

The Battalion reports that the organization Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, and Transgender Aggies are having GLBT Awareness Week this week.

It commemorates the court decision that forced Texas A&M University to give this group official recognition on campus back in 1984. Its public status undermined and continues to undermine its ability to preserve the traditional values that have made A&M a great institution.

Here a list of the events the organization is sponsoring:

  • Resource tables each day
  • Evening of the Arts
  • The Coming Out Monologues
  • “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” lecture
  • Club Halo Gender Bender Ball

A&M Student Senate Passes Unjust "Anti-Discrimination" Bill

shuskan3

The Texas A&M Student Senate passed an oppressive "anti-discrimination" bill last night. Ironically, a couple of student senators were discriminated against during the process.

The bill passed advocating for the following additions to the University Statement on Harassment and Discrimination: ethnicity, citizenship, pregnancy, sex, gender, parental status, marital status, military, political preference or activity. During the debate process many senators brought up amendments to this bill. Although some amendments were heard, amendments by Senators Justin Pulliam and me, both of us conservatives, were not considered by the floor and were censored by the Speaker of the Senate, Michele Breaux. This type of dictatorship shown by the Speaker does not advocate for the voices of students; rather, it restricts it.

A&M Professor: Rush Limbaugh "Lies," Republicans Are "Crooks," and Federal Govt. Not Getting Bigger

tonylisti

Indoctrination of students in class by faculty who promote socialist ideas and other leftist priorities.

Leftist faculty using their class time to preach politics instead of teaching the topic at hand.

Faculty who express in class blatant contempt of conservative ideas.

These are three of the 47 types of leftist abuse and bias compiled by Leadership Institute president Morton Blackwell. Professor Keith Swim engages in all three in his Business Law class at Texas A&M University.

One student in the class decided to audio record the professor's lectures to expose his leftist bias.

Toward the beginning of the course, Professor Swim said:

I hate insurance companies. Sorry if one of your parents work for one because I will trash them all year.

When discussing Article 3 of the Constitution and the U.S. court system, he said:

I am just telling y'all, they're crooks. Never vote for a Republican if you want the right judges in office.

Conservatives Fight Student-Paid Lobbying for Leftist Legislation

tonylisti

Last night, the Student Senate at Texas A&M considered three bills that would authorize a delegation, funded by students fees, to lobby for federal legislation regarding textbooks, federal student loans, college affordability, and other higher education federal programs.

Thanks to the efforts of several conservative student senators, many of them trained by CampusReform.org's Leadership Institute, the lobby bills were defeated. Kudos to Scott Bowen, Justin Pulliam, Chris Russo, Jess Fields, and Steven Crumpley.

Unfortunately, the appropriations bill for over $1300 in student fee money for the trip to D.C. was approved. However, the bill was not available to the senators or the public for viewing before the meeting. It was passed without most of the senators even reading it!

Regardless of the content of the legislation, how could it possibly be ethical to use student fees to lobby for any legislation at any level of government?

Green Fees: Fees Seizing Students' Hard-Earned Green

tonylisti
By Tony Listi, on Mar 04, 2010 In

There has been a concerted nationwide effort by the left on college campuses to burden students with so-called "green fees." Fortunately, conservative groups like the Texas Aggie Conservatives are fighting back.

Over 30 colleges and universities have already imposed such fees on students and the list is growing. Texas A&M University, the University of Texas, and Oklahoma State University all have green fees up for a student vote this week.

Even supposing that the initiatives to be funded by these fees were worthwhile (which I would deny), why should students have to pay for them during these economic hard times? Are these fees compassionate toward students and their families trying to pay for college? Not at all.

Universities should only engage in initiatives that increase efficiency and thus save them money over time. That saved money should be used to pay for the initatives, not more student fees!

Reagan's Birthday Celebration

By amy_hilton, on Feb 08, 2010 In

Editor's Note: The Texas Aggie Conservatives at Texas A&M celebrated Reagan's 99th birthday this weekend. Click here to learn how your group can commemorate a conservative's birthday on campus. It will help you attract campus attention and introduce students to conservative leaders. (Not to forget that you'll definitely enjoy doing it!)

The Texas Aggie Conservatives spent the day before President Reagan's 99th Birthday handing out fliers, giving away cake, passing out Reagan pins, and celebrating the life of an amazing conservative.  Hundreds of students came by the event in the historic Academic Plaza at Texas A&M University.

The fliers informed students of the increased living standards, economic growth, job creation and charitable donations during President Reagan's time in office. Students got a kick out of the event and enjoyed the free sugar boost on a grey Friday afternoon.

Profiles in Activism: Justin Pulliam

tonylisti
By Tony Listi, on Jan 08, 2010 In

Leadership Institute-trained activist, Justin Pulliam, is the leader of perhaps the most active conservative student group in the entire country.

This past fall semester, as chairman of the Young Conservatives of Texas chapter at Texas A&M (YCT A&M), Justin and his fellow conservatives organized 3 speaker events, 3 protests, and other activism to boot! They gained a lot of media attention for their efforts too.

Sneak Peek: Campus Reformers in Copenhagen

By Abigail Alger, on Dec 10, 2009 In

Check out sneak peek photos from Justin Pulliam, campus reformer and president of the Texas A&M Young Conservatives of Texas, who is at the UN Climate Change Conference (COP15) this week. While most students are braving finals, Justin is in Copenhagen, Denmark to participate in the conference -- proving that committed activism has big rewards!

Justin's trip is organized through the Committee for a Constructive Tomorrow (CFACT). CFACT, a partner organization of CampusReform.org, was founded to "promote a positive voice on environment and development issues." The CFACT contingent just arrived, but they promised "big things" are on the horizon, and they will keep us informed.

Justin just sent us these photos from Denmark, so we're sharing them with you first. You can see scenes from around the conference at the end of the post.

Keep checking CampusReform.org for news on what campus reformers are doing in Copenhagen. And if you're stuck stateside, you can take action against climate change dogma on your campus today.

Students From Across Texas Protest Socialized Healthcare at Texas A&M

justinpulliam
By Justin Pulliam, on Oct 18, 2009 In

The Young Conservatives of Texas A&M led students from Texas A&M and several other YCT chapters in a protest against President Barack Obama's socialized healthcare plan.

Over 200 students rallied with a theme of "community service, not community healthcare."

Many students held handmade signs with phrases such as:

  • My Health = My Choice
  • Stop the healthcare draft
  • I see debt, people!
  • Don't Draft Me Bro!
  • OBAMANOMICS...TAX & SPEND ON STEROIDS

Students expressed opposition to the "Healthcare Draft," - a reference to a plan proposed by some Democrats that would require everyone to purchase health insurance or face fines or jail time.  A petition against the Healthcare Draft gained over 300 A&M student signatures.  You can also sign a separate online version of the petition.

A&M Students Oppose Obama's Health Insurance Draft

justinpulliam
By Justin Pulliam, on Oct 01, 2009 In

The Young Conservatives of Texas A&M will help A&M students and students across the country show their opposition to Obama's Health Insurance Draft.  Not only does President Obama want a government-run single payer system, but he also wants to pass laws requiring everyone to have health insurance coverage in case his plan does not pass.
